This richly decorated Ionic temple is situated near the place where Athena and Poseidon battled over the title of the protector of Athens. Athena gave the citizens of Athens an olive tree and was chosen to dominate the city over Poseidon, who created a spring with his trident. Erechtheum was dedicated to both of them.
