Fountain of the Four Rivers

Local nameFontana dei Quattro Fiumi
LocationParione, Rome, Italy

The imposing baroque fountain designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini is located in the middle of Piazza Navona. It was made for Pope Innocent X and it was finished in 1651.

In the center of the fountain, there is an Egyptian obelisk with a little bronze dove on its top. The statues of the four rivers surrounding it stand for the four continents where the Papal influence was spreading at the time of the fountain's creation – Danube (Europe), Nile (Africa), the Ganges (Asia) and Río de la Plata (America).

In the evening the fountain is lit up beautifully. The square is lined with many cafés and restaurants where you can rest, have some food and enjoy the view of the stunning fountain.
