Built in 1552, the gate serves as the entrance to the Swiss Wing of the Hofburg, which houses the Imperial Treasury. It was designed by Pietro Ferrabosco in Renaissance style. The gate was named after the Swiss Guard, who protected the imperial palace under Empress Maria Theresa.
