St. Michael's Church

Local nameSankt Michael
LocationMunich, Deutschland

This mindblowing Jesuit church contains the royal tomb of the Wittelsbach dynasty. A must-see for any fan of history or architecture, the monumental building may be the largest Renaissance church outside of Italy.

The church was erected in two phases. First, between 1583 and 1588 was lead by an unknown architect. After the church's newly-built tower collapsed in 1590, the second phase of construction commenced.

The result of the exhausting work, finished in 1597, is the church's magnificent vault. It is allegedly the second largest vault in entire Europe.
