Plaza de Oriente

Local namePlaza de Oriente
LocationPalacio, Spain

Commissioned by King Joseph I, this plaza was built in 1844 and designed by Narciso Pascual y Colomer. This beautiful rectangular square spreads between the Royal Palace and the National Theatre.

The square is lined with 44 sculptures that depict Spanish monarchs. The most impressive of them all, however, stands at the centre of the plaza: the striking bronze statue of Felipe IV on a horse, which was modelled to resemble an artwork by Velázquez. The front part of the statue is hollow, in order not to fall forward.

The easiest way to access this plaza is via metro. The nearest station is Ópera.
