Great Arch of Defense

Local nameGrande Arche de la Défense
LocationCourbevoie, France

This unique architectural marvel is the most recognizable landmark of the La Défense district. Opened in 1989, it is more than 100 metres high. It is also similarly deep and long, so the building as a whole forms a cube. You can find it as the last stop on the famous Axe historique line, which connects all the important monuments of Paris.

The Arch is meant to be the modern-day counterpart to the famous Arc de Triomphe, erected on orders by Napoleon Bonaparte. While the latter was meant to commemorate the military victories of the French people, this arch is intended to symbolize the humanitarian and human side of the French.

Inside the monument, you can visit the Computer Museum, take a look at the city from the observatory at the top of the arch or take a break and have a lunch at the local restaurant, which also offers free wi-fi connection.
