Cheonggyecheon Stream Walk

Local name
LocationSeongdong District, Seoul, South Korea

This 8.4 km stream is proof that renovations can change the public perception of something completely. The stream used to be polluted and looked like a huge trash pile, so the authorities decided to have it covered with a highway in 1979. In 2003, they decided to restore the stream as a form of eco-friendly promotion regarding urban development.

The project was bashed by the public in the beginning, but after it was done, this place became a popular spot for relaxing and enjoying nature. The water was purified and became a natural habitat for various species of fish, insects and birds. It also helped with cooling down the surrounding areas by around 3.5°C, and the stream acts as prevention from floods during heavy rains.

There are numerous festivals during which the water and the paths along the stream light up and provide a romantic atmosphere for locals and tourists alike.

It is highly recommended to visit this place during summer because the cold breeze is a nice surprise after walking in the concrete jungle for several hours. Bring some snacks, a good book and immerse yourself with the locals.
