More details

The Soller Railway has been connecting people from the town of Soller with the city of Palma since 1912. Now there is nothing abnormal about that, except the railway system and the trains it uses have not changed in all that time. In fact they have completely retained their character. The 27km journey through some of the most stunning scenery Palma has to offer is a joy to behold, and it uses the same narrow gauge track as it did back in 1912.

The people of Soller got granted a railway as a means of transporting their fruit crops to the city. This was because otherwise, to get to the capital, they would have to go through the “Coll De Soller” which was a difficult and somewhat dangerous pass that went through the Sierra De Alfabia mountain range. The railway started in 1907 and was completed on April 16, 1912. The first trains were steam powered but in 1928 the line was electrified. The carriages that are running now are totally original and are made of wood. Inside you will see sumptuous leather clad seating and brass fittings throughout.

The journey takes around 1 hour to travel the 27 kms. Taking you north bound across the magnificent plains, then climbing sharply up into the mountain range the views change dramatically. In the process of getting to Soller from Palma, the journey takes you through thirteen tunnels as the train winds its way through the mountain range.

If you wanted to be transported back to a time when the pace of life was a little less hectic, then the Soller railway has to be recommended. 5 minutes after leaving Palma, it will seem that you're in another world as you take in the smells of the gorgeous leather and rich mahogany wood of the carriage.
