City Hall (Ayuntamiento)
An impressive 3 storey building from the seventeenth century right in the heart of the old town.
More details
The city hall, otherwise known as the Ayuntamiento or Ajuntament is an imposing building situated in the Plaza de Cort right in the heart of the old town. It was built in the seventeenth century and the mayor has resided in office here ever since. The Ayuntamiento itself is quite an impressive building. It is three storeys high and it still has the original seventeenth century roof, complete with ornate doorways and the clock by which so many people past and present seem to go about their business. The first floor has a series of decorated windows and there is a small terrace running the length of it. In the centre there is a larger window where 3 flags hang. On the top floor at the front there are a series of smaller windows centred by the impressive town clock. Outside of the building there are some ornately carved benches where the locals love to sit. It is also a very popular meeting place.
As you can imagine in years gone by it was a great seat of power as everything to do with the island was regulated from here. From building to money, it was all controlled from this very spot. The old town is well worth a visit and buildings such as this take you back to a time when Spain was a very powerful nation. Even if you are not into history, you might just like to do what the locals do and sit on the cooling stone seats and watch the world go by.
