Monastery of Sao Vicente de Fora

Local nameIgreja de São Vicente de Fora
LocationLisbon, Portugal

This 17th-century Mannerist church boasts a splendorous Baroque altarpiece and nice wall and ceiling decorations. It is one of the most important monasteries in Portugal and it served as a burial site of the Braganza monarchs. Their tombs are now housed in Braganza Pantheon, which is part of the complex. If you climb up to the towers, you will be rewarded with magnificent views of the Alfama district.

Wondering about the name? São Vicente de Fora actually means St. Vincent Outside the Walls. It reflects the location of the monastery, as it was built outside historical city walls.

The nearest metro station is Santa Apolónia.
