The column located on Piazza Colonna (named after the column) commemorates the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius and his victories over the Germanic tribes in Danubian and Marcomannic wars.
It was modelled on Trajan's Column (which is located in Trajan's Forum). It was finished in 193 AD and it is 39 meters tall. The column is a Doric one and it consists of 28 pieces of marble. It is hollow inside and there is a staircase to the top of it. Sadly, the top is not accessible to the public.
The square is lined up with shops and cafés so you can sit down and watch the imposing column while enjoying a coffee or an ice cream.
