Mariahilfer Street

Local nameMariahilfer Straße
LocationVienna, Austria

The longest shopping street in Austria. Not only that, it is also the street with the largest number of shops in Austria.

Previously called Kremser Straße, Bayrische Landstraße and many other names, this street dates its beginnings all the way back to the early middle ages, the archaeological findings prove. Its look today is much younger than that, however. The last big changes to it were made in 1897.

Nearly every big brand has its store here, concentrated mostly in the "inner" part of the street closer to the city centre. There is also plenty of smaller shops, cafés and restaurants lining the (at some points) 10-meter-wide pavements.

Visitors looking for a more atmospheric shopping experience should not miss the side streets of Mariahilfer Street in the 6th and 7th district, there are many unique shops and stalls hiding there.

The street is mostly pedestrian-only, with 25 to 70 thousand people walking it every day. There are also several subway entrances along the street, which allow you to get from one part of the street to another easily.
